Featured Film Maker: GINO SANTOS

Gino M. Santos, a 22 year old AB-FILM  of SDA, has shown much interest on films at such an early age. For a 108, he sure shows knowledge and skill that are beyond his years. He is the first ever Benildean Student who’s been included in the official selection in the 2011 Cinemalaya Film Festival with his short feature film, “Every Other Time”. That itself is a big achievement already yet he is still widely known for many more awards and recognition. He has been included in the Best of Benilde 2010 & 2011.

For his talent and skill, he has already attended workshops at New York Film Academy in Kyoto Japan, the Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film and Arts Center, and the Asia Pacific Film Institute.  Gino was chosen to represent the Philippines in the MPA-CICE workshop to be held in Beijing, China this December 2011 together with 12 representatives around South East Asia. He has also worked under ‘62nd Cannes Best Film Director’ Brillante Ma. Mendoza’s mentorship program in the international film ‘Captive’ coming out in 2012.

Take a dose of inspiration from Gino Santos himself by watching our interview with with him. Hearing him talk was pretty much of a strong push to innovate any aspiring artist and film maker. Gino himself advises, “Don’t expect everyone to like your work. Maybe it’s not for them or it’s not for you but definitely its not suppose to pull you down, it’s suppose to make you a better person.”

Who knew a bloody action packed film could be shot here from our very own SDA Building? Just Because was directed by 108 AB-FILM Major, Ryan Dolores , who also stars in this film along with several other SDA Kids.

This film was included as part of HARVEST MOON’s Top Films for 2011, there’s not a dull scene in this project.

Watch and be entertained!

FILM FEATURE: Fast Lanes by Erica Honrado

Fast Lanes, an iPhone scenery film created by ERICA HONRADO during her recent trip to LAS VEGAS, NEVADA. It features electrifying shots and scenes taken from various places all over the City of Lights. You can see the fast speed of headlights on the busy streets of Vegas as the lights blaze up the sky just after the alluring Vegas’ sunset. Its quite innovative of her to consider using her iPhone since her ever trusted Canon 550d crashed. That must be a bummer, but hey, the outcome of this short film is stunning! See for yourself!

ERICA HONRADO, a 109 Film student with the . You tell her to produce a 3-minute
film, she will deliver you a 10-minute film instead; even professors can’t exactly get mad at her because her artistic creations always leaves the audience at awe. The only rule for creativity is to “break” the rules. Thinking outside the box is what she’s supposed to exactly do and she does it, as happy and energetic as she is.

You’d think that this girl is good behind the camera but turns out, she can be as entertaining infront, in the form of belly dancing. There is no limit to the surprises you get once you meet her.

Catch our wet & muddy interview with Erica Honrado as she films her recent project under intense rain at UP Diliman. Even heavy weather could not stop this director and her crew from filming.

ANUALLE EXHIBITS Part II: Persistence of Vision

See our Interview with the Professor, Nestor Abrogena & hear what he can say about SDA’s Talent.

BASIC VIDEO CLASS BY NESTOR ABROGENA. It’s impeccably impossible for these Music Videos not to amaze you. For one, they are original music composed by CSB Students, themselves, and two these stunning videos were directed, edited & created by students who don’t even fall under the film department. These just prove how versatile & talented SDA students can be.

Under the branch of Design Foundation, the Basic Video Course requires discipline and intensive creative thinking from its students to produce their ideas into becoming a motion picture. It’s totally impressive how students manage to create stunning and professional Videos within a few months time.

Here are just a few of the MANY exceptional Videos shown during the Anualle Exhibit at the Cafeteria during the 3rd Term 2010-2011 :

Five in the Afternoon by Monica Bautista

We find it rather refreshing to hear Monica Bautista sing because she’s got this sunny afternoon vibe in her music that just reminds you of open skies and fresh site of green grass. True enough, visions were created into visuals by NAHO SAKAMOTO & GHIE CHAN(PD), the production designers of the music video. The vintage & feminine wardrobe can be credited to ANNE CO(FDM), who styled Monica’s clothes & for SHEKI VALDEZ for the make-up. It was directed by NICOLO SANTOS(ID), with NOEL CAGURANGAN(ID), as the Director of Photography.

Next Time Around by Fico Reloj

The moment you begin to hear this song by the band, To The Rescue, its not a question that you’d be transmitted into this state where the only thing that seems to matter is the music & images that play in your mind as you listen every word of the lyrics. With the smooth vocals of Fico Reloj, the atmospheric guitar & bass strums of Migs Garcia & Andrai Antonio and the calming beats of Ryck Santillan this song will make you say goodbye that boy band song you were listening to awhile ago.:)

This inspired music video was a project of ARLENE BENSAL(FDM), FRANZ TRONO(FDM), YSAB ABUEL(FDM), BERNIE NGWE(FDM) & ANDRAI ANTONIO(ID)

Hanging on A Cliff Named IV Drip by Lions & Acrobats

As spectacular as Lions & Acrobats themselves, true enought that this music video created by VINCE SANTOS-VIOLA(ANI), MICA GONZALES(FDM), VERNS TAN(FDM), KHEITH CRUZ(FDM) & JEDRICK DY(ANI) trully gave justice to the music by emphasizing the euphoric feeling the song brings with the emotive set and visual techniques & effects used on this video. We love the blue-ish-green light and the invisible drum set, which makes us wonder if we are under a visual illusion.

Film Feature: TAKE FLIGHT by Luis Magsino

This film shows the deeper side of a being’s emotion towards lost and acceptance combined with remarkable cinematography. Enjoy a piece of Luis’ creativity.

Luis Magsino, a 109 AB-FILM student who hails from Baguio has the talent and logic of a great artist in the making; he’s straightforward yet rational and he is consistent with the flow of his ideas and work. His creativity is as diverse as his personality. This is one person you surely have to meet.

Not only is he a Film Creator, he is also a photographer. What’s fascinating about him is that he does Film & Lomo Photography. He finds it to be more authentic and genuine. Here are some samples of his creative works taken from his Facebook Albums. They are very Tumblr-like and expressive.

watch this video to get a glimpse of Luis’ very warming and funny personality. enjoy!

Film Feature: UNLEASHED by ANDREA MONTELIBANO

A feel-good film directed by Andrea Montelibano starring Marco De Vera of AB-MP and her very own Husky, Sushi. It’s a film about a boy’s usual day at the park that has an unusual surprise at the end. Here’s a sneak peak of what she’s capable of. WATCH and enjoy!

It was just right in time when we caught up with Andrea for her interview because she was just about to run to her Equestrian Training.  This amazing girl from AB-FILM loves both competitive horse back riding and film making. Since she was two- years old, she has been riding horses. It was only two years ago she started to compete professionally. But it looks like this wasn’t the only thing Andrea was good at; apparently, she’s also former ballerina and now she’s a film maker.

Why we think she’s awesome: Despite the hectic schedule her training requires, she still manages to keep her grades in good form. Equestrian and Film Making are both demanding fields and it requires time and dedication. Obviously, this girl can give it her all. You can find her competing often at Polo Club, Makati.
